Witches' Sabbath

Not so long ago, stories about witches were told here.

Local Math Beijers, born in 1890 and formerly a farmhand, told a story in 1970 that there was a place near Blankenberg where witches danced at night.

This story is recorded as a saga in the archives of the Meertens Institute.

He described it as follows:

''If you go from Keer to Margraten, you will see a meadow with large pear trees near Blankenberg. Under the largest tree was a circle, trodden down as if by many feet. The witches would dance there at night. There are people who claim that they have seen this."

In addition to Blankenberg, there were also two witches dancing places near Eijsden; one in a meadow behind Breust ('t Heksewejke) and one south of Caestert.
